Mr Waqas Butt MBBS, FRCS, FEBS (Upper GI) Consultant General, Upper Gastrointestinal & Bariatric Surgeon

Mr Waqas Butt is a highly experienced Upper GI and Bariatric Surgeon who is committed to providing safe, compassionate, and personalised care. He understands that seeking surgical advice can feel overwhelming, and he takes the time to listen, explain options clearly, and support patients in making decisions that feel right for them.

He specialises in weight‑loss (bariatric) surgery, anti‑reflux procedures, hernia repair, gallbladder surgery, and the full range of upper gastrointestinal conditions. His practice focuses on minimally invasive techniques, faster recovery, and long‑term wellbeing.

Mr Butt is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and holds the European Board of Surgery Qualification in Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery. He is an active member of the Irish and British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Societies, as well as the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity (IFSO) and the International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus (ISDE). These affiliations reflect his commitment to safe, evidence‑based care and to staying at the forefront of developments in bariatric and upper gastrointestinal surgery.

Mr. Woods was appointed as a Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon at St Vincent’s University Hospital in 2024. A graduate of both Oxford University and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, he holds degrees in Medicine (First Class Honours), a Master of Surgery, and a Master’s in Medical Education. During training, he won the JJ Fitzsimons Gold Medal in Surgery. He completed his specialist training in Plastic Surgery in Ireland and was awarded Fellowship of both the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS Plast) and the European Board of Hand Surgery (FEBHS).

Following his higher surgical training in Ireland, Mr. Woods continued to develop his skills with international experience including:

• Reconstructive Microsurgery Fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York
• Skin Cancer and Head/Neck Surgery Fellowship at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust
• Aesthetic Surgery BAAPS/BAPRAS Fellowship in at the Cadogan Clinic in London.

He has received numerous academic awards throughout his career, including multiple national prizes for best presentation and clinical research, and has a strong record of achievement in surgical education, service development, and innovation.

Clinical Research and Professional Memberships

Mr. Woods is widely published, with over 25 peer-reviewed journal articles, multiple textbook chapters—including contributions to Grabb and Smith’s Plastic Surgery and Clinical Scenarios in Reconstructive Microsurgery—and frequent national and international presentations in aesthetic, reconstructive, and hand surgery. His work spans microsurgical reconstruction, lymphatic surgery, head and neck oncology, and surgical education.

He is the recipient of HSE SPARK Innovation and RCSI research grants and has led initiatives including antimicrobial stewardship in surgery, virtual hand trauma services, and service audits across multiple institutions. He is an active member of the Reconstructive Surgery Trials Network and has held governance roles such as Lead NCHD and Audit Committee Member at St Vincent’s University Hospital.

Mr. Woods maintains a particular interest in aesthetic surgery, skin cancer, lymphatic reconstruction, and complex oncologic reconstruction, and is committed to advancing patient-centred, evidence-based practice in both public and private sectors. He is a member of the Irish Association of Plastic Surgery, the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.

Bio

Dr Maebh Horan graduated from Trinity College Dublin with honours in medicine in 2012, and is working as a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at the National Maternity Hospital, Merrion Fertility Clinic, and St Michael’s Hospital Dublin.

During her training she completed an ESHRE & EBCOG Accredited Fellowship in Merrion Fertility Clinic and the National Maternity Hospital in Reproductive Medicine and Surgery, and was awarded a Doctorate of Medicine from University College Dublin. Her research focused on fertility preservation for women with endometriosis and those at risk of impaired fertility secondary to cancer treatment.

Dr Horan’s special interests are reproductive medicine and surgery, and benign gynaecology.

Biography:

Ms. Hilary Hurley is a highly skilled Consultant Vascular Surgeon with extensive experience in the diagnosis and management of vascular conditions. A graduate of University College Dublin (2002), she furthered her education with an MCh by research at University College Cork (2009) and completed her General Surgical Training, with a special focus on Vascular Surgery, in Ireland in 2018.
Ms. Hurley is deeply committed to patient-centered care, combining her exceptional diagnostic and surgical skills with a comprehensive approach tailored to each patient’s needs. She has a strong focus on quality improvement in healthcare and has undertaken numerous quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient safety and outcomes. This commitment is underpinned by her MSc in Human Factors in Patient Safety from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (2021).
Education and mentorship are central to Ms. Hurley’s professional ethos. She holds an MSc in Medical Education from Queen’s University Belfast (2011) and has a wealth of experience in curriculum development, teaching, and training undergraduate and postgraduate colleagues. Her passion for fostering learning extends to one-on-one mentorship, group instruction, and innovative educational methods.
Having practiced publicly at St. Vincent’s University Hospital since July 2021, Ms. Hurley is now delighted to offer her expertise privately at St. Vincent’s Private Hospital.
