Professor Mallon graduated in medicine (MB BCh BAO) from Queen’s University Belfast and underwent postgraduate clinical and academic specialist training in Infectious Diseases in London (2 years) and Sydney, Australia (8 years), where he was awarded both his clinical fellowship (FRACP) and a PhD in HIV research from the University of New South Wales. Upon his return to Ireland he was also awarded honorary Irish fellowship (FRCPI) in 2007 and is listed on the specialist register in both Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases.

Biography:

Professor Mallon is the UCD Professor of Microbial Diseases, the leading academic role in Infection in the UCD School of Medicine.

He has more than 20 years’ experience working in Infectious Diseases and HIV and his patient-focused clinical and academic approach has had an important impact in improving outcomes for people living with infectious diseases such as HIV. His main clinical focus has been HIV, where he has built a strong clinical and academic unit that actively encourages patients to participate in research that leads to improved patient care. He also has a strong track record in collaborative care models for patients with complex infections such as spinal and orthopaedic infections.

Professor Mallon is internationally respected as a leading researcher in HIV and Infectious Diseases. He is director of the UCD Centre for Exploratory Pathogen Host Research (CEPHR), which focuses on international, collaborative, translational research into all aspects of infections, with a special emphasis on viral infections such as HIV.

Professor Mallon is a Regional Representative for the European AIDS Clinical Society (EACS), Chairman of the EACS Comorbidities Guidelines Panel and is Director of the prestigious Wellcome Trust / HRB Irish Clinical Academic Training (ICAT) Programme and sits on the board of HIV Ireland.
