Qualifications

Mr. Gallagher studied medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), graduating with honours in 2003. He undertook his formal postgraduate surgical training under the auspices of RCSI, and was admitted as a fellow in 2014 (FRCSI).

Training

Mr Gallagher was also awarded a fellowship of the European Board of Surgery (FEBS) in Transplantation in 2014. In addition to his general surgical training he undertook further specialty fellowships in Hepatobiliary and Transplant surgery in the University of Hong Kong, the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and finally in Northwestern University, Chicago, where he graduated from their prestigious transplant surgery program.

Mr Gallagher is a member of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons and the International Hepato-Pancreatico-biliary Association.

Biography

Mr Gallagher was appointed to St. Vincent’s Healthcare Group as a Consultant General, Hepatobiliary and Transplant surgeon in 2015 and was also appointed as the Consultant Clinical Lead of the pancreas transplant program in St. Vincent’s University Hospital.

He developed a parallel interest in research during his training and completed a Masters thesis in 2007. He has published extensively in the scientific literature, written several book chapters and presents at national and international meetings on a regular basis. He is also a reviewer for several surgical journals in his fields of interest.

Mr. Gallagher is experienced in all aspects of general surgery including hernias, gallbladder problems and emergency surgery, as well as in the more complex areas of his specialty including liver surgery for primary and metastatic cancers, surgery on patients with cirrhosis, pancreas cancer surgery and the management of acute and chronic pancreatitis.
